User Impersonation allows Super Admins (users with both HR Admin and Tech Admin permissions) to access the platform from another user's point of view.
This feature is not available by default. Please contact our support team if you'd like us to enable it for you.
Risks to consider
When you impersonate a user, you can see all their confidential data and take any actions on their behalf. There is no “read-only” mode.
To prevent the gravest problems, you cannot impersonate users in your reporting line, but you can still impersonate other senior employees. For example, if you report into the CFO, you may still be able to impersonate your CTO and view their performance reviews, private Objectives, and private Anytime Feedback. Due to the security risks, we recommend using User Impersonation only as a last resort.
We write an audit log entry the moment you impersonate someone, and SI staff can review the logs in case the impersonation feature is abused. However, if you mistakenly publish something while impersonating a user, others may receive notifications immediately that appear as if the action was taken by the impersonated user themself - so you still need to be very careful when using this feature.
Users are not notified when you impersonate them, but the Small Improvements team and other HR Admins in your account can see this in the audit logs.
How it works
Locate the employee profile of the user you want to impersonate and select Impersonate in the Manage menu.
You'll be taken to the homepage of the impersonated user, where you will see exactly what they see.
A banner at the top of the page reminds you that you’re in impersonation mode and contains a button to exit the impersonation mode. The note follows you around on every page.
