Enable Cascading Objectives on a Cycle
To start using this feature, begin by creating a new Objective cycle. You can enable or disable Cascading Objectives by clicking the check box in the "Compose Objectives Features" section of the cycle setup. The remaining setup steps will follow the same process as your other objective cycles.
Define Company Objectives
Once your cycle is enabled, you can create Company Objectives and mark them under Type. You should assign the Objective to the person who will own it. For example, for a Company Objective, this could be someone from the C-level suite, an admin in the tool, or the organization's CEO.
Define Group Objectives
Next, create Group Objectives that align with Company Objectives and represent how different groups plan to address the overarching initiatives.
You can assign group names as you see fit. For example, you could use “Marketing” to reflect an actual department’s name or use an ad hoc project team name like “Developer Hiring Spree,” which could be a collaboration between developers, marketing, and HR. Just remember that the way you organize groups will reflect in the exported data from the cycle.
Link Company Objectives
Let’s now connect your new Group Objective to the specific Company Objective. On your new Group Objective, click “Select Parent Objective” and pick the corresponding Company Objective.
Create Individual Objectives
Individual Objectives will be created in a similar way to how they are currently created in Small Improvements. Employees can click the create button, select the appropriate cycle, define their Objective, and link to a suitable Group or Company Objective.
Browse Cascade View and Explore Linked Objectives
All admins and employees can browse the Cascade View in the Objectives → Company section of your navigation menu.
They will see how a Company Objective, such as “Building an Inclusive Culture,” is supported across teams. Then, they may explore further to see how each individual will contribute to this Objective. Without Company Objectives, the Cascade View will appear blank.
When viewing an Objective, you will be able to see its linked Objectives at a glance:
Test it for Yourself
You can easily try out Cascading Objectives without interrupting your ongoing efforts. Simply create a new objective cycle, pick yourself and a few coworkers as testers, and enable the Cascading Objectives feature as described above.
