[Objectives] Setting Up an Objectives Cycle

Learn how to set up and manage Objective Cycles in Small Improvements. Cycles help bring structure and clarity to goal-setting at your org.

Updated over a week ago

Objective cycles help structure your goal-setting process by defining who can participate, when objectives can be updated, and what features are included. You can run multiple overlapping cycles to support different teams or needs, like company-wide planning and onboarding.

Create or Edit a Cycle

  1. Go to Admin > Objectives from the left-hand menu.

  2. To create a new cycle, click +Create Cycle in the top right corner.

  3. To edit an existing cycle, click Edit Cycle Settings next to the cycle.

Note: Each cycle has its own settings and timeline. Multiple cycles can run at the same time.

Choose Participants

Decide who the cycle applies to:

  • Entire Company

  • Select People – choose individuals or groups for tailored cycles

This flexibility supports onboarding plans, custom goal-setting, or performance plans.

Tip: Choosing Entire Company automatically includes new employees as they join. If you select Select People, you’ll need to add new users manually. These are labeled as Limited Cycle to help you keep track.

Name and Describe the Cycle

Add a name, timeframe, and introduction for employees. Use the introduction to:

  • Set expectations

  • Encourage alignment with company goals

  • Invite employees to connect their work to shared objectives

Define the Cycle Process

Choose your preferred settings:

  • Who can create and edit objectives: Employees, Managers, or Both

  • Default visibility:

    • Private: Only the owner can see

    • Protected: Visible to the owner, their manager, and management chain

    • Public: Visible to everyone

Tip: For easier alignment when using Cascading Objectives, set default visibility to Public. Objective owners can still adjust visibility individually.

  • Automatic reminders: Sent 30, 10, and 3 days before the due date, and 7 days after if objectives are still open

Add Structure with Optional Settings

Enable additional features to help guide and organize goal-setting:

  • Cascading Objectives: Align individual goals with shared company goals

  • Key Results: Break goals into smaller steps or milestones

  • Status: Track progress (Open, In Progress, Achieved, etc.)

Tip: Start simple. Only enable what adds value for your team.

Advanced Options (Optional)

  • Categories: Tag objectives with themes like "Q3 Priorities" or "Personal Development"

  • Ratings: Add rating scales for evaluating progress

  • Completion Percentage: Manually enter progress updates

  • Weighting: Prioritize goals by assigning percentage values (e.g., 60%, 30%, 10%)

Set the Timeline

Define when objectives can be created or updated:

  • Set timeframes for employees and managers with a Shared Timeline

  • Choose a default due date

  • Decide if updates are allowed after the cycle ends

  • Learn more about creating and updating objectives here.

This ensures flexibility to match your workflow.

Tip: If you need a separate timeline for employees and managers, you can split the timeline.

Export Cycle Data

Admins can export cycle data to CSV or Excel:

  1. Go to Admin > Export Cycle Data

  2. Choose to sort by Owner or Objective Title

  3. Download from your dashboard

  4. Learn more about Objective exports here.

Use Filters and Manage Objectives

On the Cycle Overview screen, you can:

  • Filter by teams, categories, or status

  • Expand team members’ objectives to:

Status Options

Each objective includes a status. Default options are:

  • Ongoing: Open, In Progress, Awaiting Approval

  • Complete: Achieved, Not Achieved, Deferred, Partially Achieved

Tip: Want custom status labels? Contact us via in-app chat or email [email protected]. Let us know which statuses should count as complete and your preferred colors (HEX codes work best).

Notifications and Reminders

Automatic Emails

  • Sent daily

  • Managers are notified when team members create, edit, or comment

  • Employees are notified when an objective is created or edited for them

Due-Date Reminders

  • Sent 30, 10, and 3 days before the due date

  • Sent 7 days after if the objective is still open

Manual Nudges

  • Admins and managers can send a nudge to employees or their managers

  • Nudges send immediate email reminders
